On Thursday, the preliminary hearing for Corey Walker, one of the men accused of killing Pop Smoke, was held, as officials decide on whether he should go to trial.
According to the New York Daily News, Detective Christian Carrasco was the first person to take the stand and detail what happened the night Pop Smoke was fatally shot. While on the stand he testified that Pop was in the shower, at the Los Angeles home he rented when masked gunmen made their way inside through a second-story balcony. He continued to state that one of the suspects allegedly put a black semiautomatic firearm to the forehead of a woman that was present in the home that night.
The woman spoke with authorities hours after Pop Smoke was shot and killed. The detective recalled the woman’s testimony and said, “She heard a struggle coming from the shower area and heard Mr. Jackson screaming. Mr. Jackson ran out of the bathroom and then she heard a loud pop and [heard] Mr. Jackson fall to the ground. Two other individuals began to kick him.”
He continued, “Mr. Jackson gets up and runs downstairs. She hears two more pops. She follows Mr. Jackson, sees him on the ground, and screams for Michael (Durodola) to call 911.”
The woman told police that she believes the suspects took Pop Smoke’s jewelry before leaving the home.
He was rushed to the hospital for a major surgery called “left thoracotomy,” but unfortunately, he did not survive.
Another detective took the stand to testify and said that vehicle that was caught on surveillance footage dropping off the suspects was traced to Corey Walker. He had been stopped in the car for an unrelated incident before the fatal shooting.
It was previously reported that four suspects were connected to the incident, however, Walker is the only adult in the case. A judge has already decided the remaining three suspects were minors at the time of the February 19, 2020 shooting. They were not identified by name, but they have been charged with murder and robbery.
The Los Angeles County DA stated that if convicted, Walker could face the death penalty.
Christopher Darden, the attorney for Walker reportedly said he was a fan of Pop Smoke’s music but said “our position is that Mr. Walker didn’t kill anybody.”
It was noted that Pop Smoke’s mother, Audrey Jackson, was present in the courtroom to hear the detectives’ testimonies during the two-day hearing in the murder case. The hearing will cover the testimonies prosecutors consider important to convince a judge Walker should face trial.
Pop Smoke’s debut album “Shoot For The Stars, Aim For The Moon” was released on July 3, 2020, and has dominated the charts since its release. As previously reported, Pop Smoke has earned 10 nominations for this year’s Billboard Music Awards.
